In honor of Saint Lucia’s 35th anniversary of Independence, the Consulate General of Saint Lucia in New York has organized a number of celebratory events, including a special Independence 35 Flag Raising Ceremony to take place at Brooklyn’s Municipal office building, located at 209 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn.
The event will be held on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 10:00 am and will include remarks by Saint Lucian dignitaries and performances by numerous Saint Lucian artists. This event follows last weekend’s successful New York premiere of “Poetry Is An Island,” a documentary film that chronicles the life and works of the Hon. Derek Walcott, Saint Lucian Nobel Laureate.
Friday’s Independence 35 Flag Raising ceremony will feature remarks by the Hon. Julian Du Bois, Saint Lucia’s Consul General in New York, and the Hon. Eric Adams, Brooklyn’s new Borough President, while other elected officials and dignitaries will be in attendance. Host of this memorable event will be Michel Aubertin, Saint Lucian musician and performer.
Independence 35 celebrations will continue on Saturday, February 22, 2014, the actual day of independence, with an Interfaith Service to be held at 5:30 pm at Saint Augustine’s Episcopal Church, located at 4301 Avenue D, Brooklyn, New York. This year’s service is intended to include all individuals who desire to celebrate the island’s achievements in reverence to God. The Independence 35 Interfaith Service is organized by the Consulate in collaboration with the Saint Lucia House Foundation. Immediately following the service, all attendees are invited to a special reception to be held at the Saint Lucia House, located at 438 E 48th Street, Brooklyn, New York.
The Consulate General of Saint Lucia wishes Saint Lucians at home and abroad a happy 35th anniversary of independence and invites all to take part in its ongoing Independence 35 celebrations.
